A Life of Learning

I have always had a passion for games, and was introduced to them at a young age, sparking a lifelong love of the medium. The first game I ever played was Spyro on the Playstation 1, and truly, that was what started it all. I have also loved reading and writing since I was little, so it was only a matter of time before my love for games eventually met with my love for writing. I began to play a lot of story-driven games, and one of the first was Baldur's Gate. I was enchanted by the fantastic setting, the characters, and the plot despite the game being nearly as old as I was. Baldur's Gate led me to Dungeons & Dragons, and other games like it; it shaped me and inspired me. I owe a lot to this game, and it is no exaggeration to say that I would not be who I am today without it. Dungeons and Dragons gave me an outlet for my creativity, and allowed me to create worlds, characters, and stories freely that I could share with friends, and this brought together my loves of games and storytelling, and set the foundation for many of my philosophies on design and narrative, as the reactive nature of D&D allowed me to see exactly what resonated with people.

As I grew older, I decided I wanted to make games like the ones I was playing, and I got my first taste of game development in high school with MMF2, but I didn't initially pursue that desire in college, cautioned against it by family members who told me making games was too hard for someone who hated math. I originally was an English major, and pursued my passion of stories instead, but it was actually my English professor, who always praised my writing, that told me about this new 'GIMM' program on campus. He had noticed the topics of my technical writing often involved games, and knew about my love for video games, and from then on I was in GIMM, and I was able to transfer my storytelling passion and skills to writing for games.

The GIMM Program

Project Oriented Learning

In GIMM, we learn by doing, and more than anything, we learn by failing. Fail fast, fail often, and you can create something incredible. This is true of any medium, and is similar to the editing and revision process of writing.

My Philosophies

"I do not remember the books I have read any more than the meals I have eaten; even so, they have made me."

My philosophy on design, and life as a whole, is shaped largely by my time in GIMM, but were I to try and point to any singular moments or teaching, I could not, but I can tell you what I believe. I believe that all stories are a journey, and no one who begins a journey should ever be the same person that ends that journey; it just doesn't make for interesting characters. I am no different. I am always striving to continue to learn and grow as an individual. I believe that failure is impossible to avoid, but I also believe that failure is the best teacher, if one has discipline. Everyone in this world may suffer from one of two pains; the pain of discipline, or the pain of regret. There is always more to learn, and always another story to tell.

My Skills

Object Oriented Programming

A strong foundation in OOP principles allows me to easily adapt to new languages and IDEs.

Narrative Design

My passion is for storytelling, and creating memorable stories and characters through meaningful interactions. I've taken classes on creative writing, poetry, linguistics, psychology, and even film to further my understanding of the world's people and their stories.

Project Management

I am experienced with industry standard forms of project organization, as in GIMM we operate with agile methodology and scrum management style.

Multilingual

I have a Japanese Language Certificate from Boise State University as part of my minor in Japanese. I am in the process of learning Dutch as well.

Adobe Suite

The GIMM curriculum provided me with exposure to the majority of the Adobe Suit, and I am proficient with Photoshop.

3D Modeling

I created all the assets in my VR game, Magecraft. Some of my 3D work can be found on my ArtStation profile, linked in the Nav Bar, or in the Projects section of this site.

Web Dev

This website is made with bootstrap and hosted with an AWS S3 bucket, set up by me.

And More

I am a well rounded and capable developer who can fit with any team, and my foundation in various types of development allows me to easily work within groups, and collaborate with artists, writers, developers, and designers.
